Updates from Theatre Baddeck

November 10, 2020

It's been a while since you've heard from us - 2020 has been quite a year. A summer without a theatre season and an outcry for justice against racism across our country and the world has given us time and perspective to reflect on our future. We, as a company, will move forward being consciously and concretely antiracist in our practice. This will require active listening, policy evaluation, learning and unlearning, and difficult conversations - this is not achieved with one single action or statement. We must do more to fully hold the mirror up to life lived on Unama’ki/Cape Breton Island for ALL of its inhabitants, including Indigenous People, Black People, and People of Colour. We will have to demonstrate this commitment with actions, not words, and we are making plans that we can't wait to share with you.

We are looking forward to a summer theatre season in 2021 with OPTIMISM! Early in the new year we will be announcing the details of how our 2021 season will proceed. We remain hopeful that the season we had planned for 2020 will be experienced by our audiences along with some additional offerings.

We have missed connecting with you through storytelling - soon you will experience some DIGITAL CONTENT we've been working on. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, in the spirit of reflection, we sat down, turned on a camera, and started talking about what we've accomplished as a company so far and where we'd like to go next. Click here for a teaser of that conversation.

We are so grateful to you for your support of our professional theatre company since 2015. We look forward to connecting with you over the winter and, hopefully, with live theatre in summer 2021.

Please stay safe, stay distant, wear a mask, wash your hands - we'll see you soon!

Sincerely,
Christy MacRae-Ziss and Hannah Ziss

May 4, 2020

After many weeks of deliberation, it is with great sadness that we announce the postponement of our 2020 season to 2021. The health and safety of our audiences and artists is our top priority. Due to the ongoing government restrictions and concerns around public gatherings due to COVID-19, we simply cannot proceed with a season that could put so many people at risk.

After a record-breaking 2019, we planned our biggest season yet for 2020. We cannot understate how devastating it is to put it on hold. But “on hold” is a key phrase. We have rescheduled all four shows from the season – Outside Mullingar; He’d Be Your Mother’s Father’s Cousin; Lauchie, Liza and Rory; and Where You Are – to June 24-October 3, 2021. The detailed schedule will be released in the new year and single tickets will go on sale at that time. Season Passes for the season are on sale now.

If public health conditions permit theatrical performances later in the year, we will jump at the opportunity to present something. You should also stay tuned for announcements in the coming weeks on how we plan to stay connected with you, safely, during these unprecedented times. Click here to join our email list. Limitations breed creativity and invention and we are excited to share what we are planning!

As you can imagine, a year without ticket sales will be a difficult one for our organization. We know that these are financially difficult times for many of you as well, but if you are wondering how you can help, consider purchasing a 2021 Season Pass now or making a charitable donation to our organization. Generosity of any size will help sustain our organization through these difficult times.

Through all the uncertainty, we want you to know that we are ultimately proceeding with optimism for the future. We know that art will provide profound catharsis when we are permitted to gather in groups once again. And we are fuelled every day by what a gift it will be to safely assemble artists and audience at 24 Queen Street, Baddeck for live, professional theatre.

Until then, stay safe, wash your hands, and we will be in touch!

Warm regards,

Christy MacRae-Ziss and Hannah Ziss
