THE STORY

Since Theatre Baddeck’s first season in 2015, our mission has been to enrich the culture of Baddeck and Victoria County with high-quality entertainment while contributing to the local tourism economy through vibrant cultural events. In 9 seasons we’ve proudly achieved this goal: 498 performances over 25 productions, 3 World Premieres and 6 Atlantic Canadian Premieres, attendance that has more than quadrupled, and industry recognition with 19 Merritt Award nominations and 3 wins for achievements in professional theatre in Nova Scotia.

Now we’re ready for the next exciting chapter: a venue of our own, managed year-round. Enter Greenwood United Church. We’re thrilled to embark on this mutually beneficial partnership as a long-term tenant. Our presence will support the church’s continued vitality while giving Theatre Baddeck the opportunity to expand our impact—ensuring our sustainability, fostering community, and strengthening the local economy.

THE MISSION

A long-lasting home for Theatre Baddeck that will increase our capacity, ensure our sustainability, boost our production values, and improve the visitor experience for our patrons.
Increased Theatre Baddeck programming happening year round that will include more arts education, movie screenings, and more!
A quality rental space for the local community and cultural producers across the country. The GAC will be perfect for meetings, events, receptions, conferences, dinners, and so much more. It will also attract quality cultural offerings from other producers, which will enrich local culture all year round.

THE TIMELINE TO DATE

September 2023-March 2024: Initial project scope consultation with Novita Interpares.
October 26, 2024: Deptartment of Communities, Culture, Tourism & Heritage announces $100,000 of support for phase 1 of the project.
January 1, 2025: Theatre Baddeck begins its 10-year lease at Greenwood United Church.
February 1, 2025: Dillon Consulting Ltd. completes their code compliance and building study.
February 3, 2025: Renovation begins!
February 11, 2025: ACOA announces $93,000 of support for phase 1 of the project.
February 26, 2025: Doors Open: A Campaign for the New Greenwood Arts Centre begins and reaches 3% completion on Day One!
July 11, 2025: Phase 1 of renovations are complete and Theatre Baddeck opens at the GAC for the first time!
Winter 2026: Theatre Baddeck successfully raises $400,000 to perform Phase Two of renovations

THE NEXT STEPS

May 2026-March 2027: Phase Two of renovations, which will include structural upgrades, installation of a steel lighting grid, purchase of 10-20% of the planned lighting and sound equipment suite, purchase of the requisite equipment to start screening movies
2027-2028: Phase Three of renovations (cost $1.6 M)
- A 127-seat seating bank and the requisite structural work to support it
- A fourth washroom
- The remaining lighting, sound, projection equipment
- The drapery and other acoustic treatments to make this a properly functioning theatre with expanded backstage
- Improvements to the lower level
