ABOUT THE PLAY

Anthony and Rosemary are two middle-aged, introverted misfits. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland, a state of affairs that—due to his painful shyness—suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door watching the years slip away. With Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families, they both have every reason to fear catastrophe. In this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion, these yearning, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is very funny and ultimately deeply moving. Outside Mullingar is a Tony Award nominated, compassionate, delightful work about how it’s never too late to take a chance on love.

REVIEWS

"Shanley’s deceptively simple but seductive (and very funny) Irish fable celebrates both the end of life and, uncommonly, the middle. No one is young here, and everyone has lost someone, but this is one of the most uplifting plays you’ll ever want to find." - Chicago On Stage

"This charmer of a play is about accepting who you are, where you come from and where you belong, making it a tender paean to rural life, to the Irish spirit and to the enduring belief that love will find a way." - The Hollywood Reporter
